Nike Air is a gas that's pressurized inside a tough yet flexible urethane bag.
The large molecular structure of this gas prevents it from escaping through the
urethane membrane. These Air-Sole units are encapsulated in the midsole beneath
the heel, forefoot or in both locations, depending upon the specific needs of
the athlete for whom a particular shoe is designed. These needs are determined
by the sport played, athlete's size, terrain, distance covered, speed and
direction of movement. Whatever the circumstances, the Air-Sole unit compresses
to reduce the force of impact and then immediately recovers to its original
shape and volume, ready for the next blow. During the 26.2 miles of a marathon,
a runner's foot endures more than 25,000 heel strikes.
WHAT IS MAX AIR?
Max Air is made through a technique called "blow-molding", which allows the
greatest volume of Nike Air without compromising the strength or integrity of
the Air-Sole unit. Dual-pressure cushioning address the need for impact
protection and rear foot stability. These high-volume Air-Sole units are visible
in the heel and forefoot. The unique adaptability of Nike-Air units are located
in the heel, forefoot and arch to provide athletes with full-length, high-volume
protection.
WHAT IS ZOOM AIR?
Zoom Air starts with two fabric layers connected by thousands of vertical
fibers, each attached at both ends to the fabric layer. These fibers are then
surrounded with pressurized gas inside a Nike-Air unit. While the pressurized
air molecules exert an outward force, the fibers are placed in tension and exert
an opposing inward force to keep the air bag from ballooning out. On impact, the
air bag compresses to relieve the tension on the fibers. After impact, the
pressurized gas expands the air bag and again places the fibers under tension.
These taut fibers compress on impact, then spring back immediately. Zoom Air is
also incredibly thin: a mere eight millimeters provides the athlete with impact
cushioning, while keeping the foot close to the ground for optimum feel and
quick response.
WHAT IS VISIZOOM?
The Air Zoom Citizen introduced in late 1998 was Nike's first Air VisiZoom
running shoe. Visible Zoom Air - VisiZoom - consists of small fibers inside an
air bag allowing for ultimate responsiveness while maintaining a low profile to
the ground. Making Zoom Air visible means taking it to the very edge of the
foot, resulting in more cushioning and less of the heavier, unresponsive midsole
foam. It's technology you can see, feel, and understand.
WHAT IS TUNED AIR?
Simply put, Tuned Air is a patented cushioning technology that provides the
optimum blend of cushioning and motion control in a single midsole cushioning
system. Tuned Air technology combines Air cushioning with mechanical elements to
provide maximum impact protection with enhanced stability, guiding the foot
through foot strike. Using sport and body type specific configurations of
specially designed hemisphere- shaped mechanical elements. Tuned Air delivers a
more stable ride, maximum impact protection, and motion control in appropriate
regions of the midsole.
